How to Make Paper Beads

Create Beautiful Paper Beads with a Twist of Tradition

Hello, friends!

Today, I'm sharing a delightful + eco-friendly craft that we've been enjoying here on campus—making paper beads! It’s the perfect way to upcycle old magazines, newspaper, or any colorful scraps you have lying around. These beads are not only stunning but also a fun and simple project that you can enjoy solo or with a group of crafty kiddos.

To make your own paper beads, all you need are strips of paper, glue, and a toothpick or skewer. Roll each strip tightly around the toothpick, starting from the wide end and finishing at the narrow point, then secure it with a dab of glue. Once your bead is dry, you can coat it with clear nail polish or varnish to give it a glossy finish. Voila! You have a colorful, custom bead to use in jewelry or decorations. The process is simple, but the results are always unique and beautiful.

Now since I am living over here in Kenya — I couldn’t help but think about the history of traditional African bead-making! Beads in Africa have been cherished for centuries, made from materials like clay, bone, wood, and even recycled glass, and then they’re also made the same way as we are making them! With papers, magazines, and scraps of colorful materials. They are often used to tell stories, mark important events, or signify status within communities. The intricate craftsmanship and symbolism of African beads make them more than just adornments—they're a connection to culture, heritage, and personal identity. This tradition continues today, and many artists across Africa still handcraft beads using techniques passed down through generations.

So, while we craft our lovely paper beads here, it’s inspiring to think of the long, beautiful legacy of bead-making and how even the simplest materials can be transformed into something meaningful and stunning.
